Harvey Wallbanger

September 1, 2008 –

So not only am I becoming a domestic (ie. cooking) Goddess, I also want to become a cocktail Goddess.  My cocktail of the week is… (don’t say you should open a bar/bistro – I prefer the more, shall we say, intimate approach?) …

The Harvey Wallbanger.  Now I chose this not because it is a classic or because it has a dubious history – there are two versions of how this fab cocktail came into existence…

Version 1:
Bartender Bill Doner created it while a bartender at ‘The Office’ in Newport Beach, California. Simple and believable.

Version 2 (and much more fun to tell): In California a surfer named Harvey liked his screwdrivers spiked with Galliano. After a bad day, when he lost an important surfing contest, he had one too many. Trying to leave the bar, Harvey stumbled into both furniture and the wall. Being a regular at this bar, and despite his performance, he returned and simply became known as “the Wallbanger”.

I must say I prefer the latter, but I digress.  No, the reason that I chose this one is because….

This was the only cocktail that I had all the ingredients for!  Yes, I know I must try harder, and I will.  I will get lots of these crazy looking bottles and mix like a mad person.  I have always had them mixed for me before, it’s a whole new world – I like it though!!

Oh and don’t you just hate having tons of flora to get through before you taste your cocktail?  No, we don’t want red cherries, umbrellas or anything else naff.  Just a fragrant cocktail with maybe a piece of fruit on the rim, thank you.

…and I expect you’ll be wanting the recipe too? :)

(serves 1)

Cracked ice, 2 measures of fresh orange juice, 1 measure of vodka, 2 teaspoons of Galliano.  They say stir, I say shake, it’s up to you though.  Finish it nicely with a slice of pineapple or lime on the rim and say cheers darling!
