But dear reader, I learn of a new fashion fix for this coming season, back to the fifties.  Well you know what that means dont you?  Hour glass figures, pencil skirts et al.  Not, I hasten to add, old style teddy boy quiffs and ladies who have lived in big skirts, ankle socks and greased back pony tails for the last 50 years – yes we have all seen them.  No we are channelling Kelly and Mansfield, Hayworth and dare I say it Monroe! – the most beautiful woman who ever lived.  I am so excited I think I may well have to go on a shopping spree :)

I will be in fashion for once, horray!

Anyway, I am on a roll now…. whooha!

So I left the escorting business.  A couple of reasons, and none of them to do with the threats and intimidation.

I wanted to get my degree and I wanted to travel the world, oh and I wanted to change the world too.

Which one should I start with?  It made sense that I did my degree first;  and I loved it so much I stayed on to take another one.  Im greedy like that.  If I like it, I want another one ;)

I would have been a perpetual student and I was indeed thinking along the lines of a career in academia – get a PhD, research; become a lecturer.

But then I experienced the back stabbing; not againt me,  you understand; senior lecturers, internal politics.  Holy moly, if you think ladies of the night can cat fight, you want to see these guys.  Its done with stealth though.  A jab here, a turn of the knife there, behind backs.  I was appalled.  I looked up to these guys, I thought they knew better, I thought they were better.  But they werent.  Of course not all were like that, some were lovely and Im sure there are politics within all industries, but I think I was destined to be self employed.

So I decided not to pursue this path,  much to the chagrin of my professor.  ‘I think you will regret your decision’ he said.  I havent, not for one moment.

Next, I tackle another part of my plan; to save the world.  Actually it wasn’t the first time.  I have been trying to save the world since I was eight and cajoled my friends into fundraising for the local old people’s home.  Sickening really and no-one had the decency to tell me that the place was state funded :) I dont know where I got the idea that these were folks who needed some kid to raise money for them.

I can almost see your sympathetic smile and nod (and God forbid, eye rolling :)   ‘Poor love, what was she thinking?, save the world indeed!’

I think everyone should, at least once in their life try, or even think they are capable of saving the world.  Ok maybe that is a gandiose statement or phrase rather.  Maybe I should say, ‘Have some impact, make a difference’  Yes thats better.  Everyone kept saying   ‘Oh Rhia?  yes she wants to save the world‘  A bit like that character in Dirty Dancing.  ‘Nobody puts Baby in the corner’  hehehe :)

So I did, I saved the world.

Im rambling again arent I?  Right so I tried to change the world, got a few mortar boards and then set off;  around the world.  As you do. Well, you have to dont you?  A year.  Backpacking.  On my own. YEE HAA!

You really get to know yourself when you spend that much time on your own – or do you?  I used to think I did but some things lately have made me question that.  Listen, its all a learning curve; this thing called life.

So after this big adventure, I come back, more than happy to be back in beautiful England – this green and pleasant land, and it is, oh it is.  I head back to the SW, which  I hadnt lived in for a good many years and thought… ‘Well what do I do now?’…

Its important not to get bitter though.  I read something once;  resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.  How true.

So, the lesson was learnt, well and truly.  Be careful who you give your address to, screen people, be selective and if all that fails – set the dog on them :)

I wont go into too many details here lest some loon decides to do it to someone else, just to say bricks through windows at 4am,  menacing phone calls and more.

They scared most of the ladies and they left, went away.  People used to say, ‘Why arent there many ladies in Plymouth?’  – ‘Well, I dont know’ says I.  It sounded as though I was being bitter if I told them the truth.

My reaction at the time, as always was to think  and say ‘You can go to hell’; and I did say that, as new and as a green as I was, but I cant help being a tad feisty.

Listen Irish and French extraction?;  Oh alright and some good old English stiff upper lip and true grit thrown in – what a combination and what do you expect?

I make light of it now, but actually it was quite terrifying, initially not knowing who or what you are dealing with.  I would hate this stuff to happen to some young chick, really. But then, in those days I was that young chick.

I called the police, they were brilliant actually (Sgt Wendy) and a friend bought me a dawg too.

No not a poodle to comfort me, or a handbag dog -  a ‘Come on then if you think you’re hard enough’ dog – a dobermann.  Actually she was a doberwoman (a feminist dont you know). She spent ages reading Andrea Dworkin – what can you do?  When they are in their cozy dog bed, all alone without supervision??

She was my best friend, my (almost) constant companion for a good 9 years, they dont live too long, dobermanns or womans for that matter.  I adored her and she adored me more.  She was a very special girl; the softest, friendliest, daftest dog in the world – if she knew you. If she didnt…. well that was a different story and that was the whole point.     It stopped them though, these vile cowards,  in their tracks. She looked after me, that lovely girl.

It really broke my heart when she died, in my arms.  Bless her,  she was so special and so loyal. I loved her. I will cry now if you ask me to talk about her.

They still run a massage parlour in Plymouth, you know, to this day, these people.  Shameful really.

So I carried on, despite the nonsense and then after a few years I decided to stop, to retire, to do other things – and I did that for 6 years.  What made me come back?  I’ll tell you….

So my answer as always is no, no, no and no. I had one today ask me if my clients would like to be interviewed.  ‘Are you totally insane??!!’  I think and then I think again  ‘Hang on, this is some 21 year  old chick straight out of uni, first research job and all that and I cut her some slack.  She did phrase things a tad crassly though and I  had to put her straight on that…

She used the word ‘use’ several times as in I am/we are used, us ladies – by men. I took it upon myself to explain that we dont take kindly to that word, just as she wouldnt take kindly to me saying she was ‘used’ as an employee or in any context. Im not into all this PC stuff, but some things, well they just dont sound right.

It has to change you know, this nonsense, this perception that people have.  You will say ‘Well you should be  part of the documentary then’  But no, these people arent after the truth, my side, they are after salaciousness.  Thats business, thats what sells newspapers and what makes people watch TV programmes and therefore gets advertising revenue.  I understand that, we all do.  I am just not going to be part of it thats all.

Climbs down slowly off high horse.  Good for the bottom, horse riding apparently ;) x
