Living the Dream

January 2, 2011 –

So, my New Years Eve was rather spectacular.  A 5 course exquisite champagne dinner with a special surprise – The Scots Guard playing just before midnight!  Wow, it was amazing, incredible.  I wont forget that one in a hurry.  Im a spoilt wench. I have said thank you numerous times, but once again, thank you Mister x

And then, there I was tonight in a proper old London pub listening to some great blues (did I tell you how much I lurvvve the blues???) – the sax player jumped up on top of the bar, yes indeed.  It took me straight back to New Orleans.

I was there in  Feb 2004, before the hurricaine struck.  Did I tell you this already?  I was there during the Mardi Gras.  Hmm.  I thought I could party, but I bowed out after two days.  Jeez can those people party. Crazy.

So, I was with a girl friend that I had met where I was staying.  In fact I met a lot of friends but New Orleans is that kind of place isnt it?  Anyway, new friend and I decided to head off down to the French Quarter. Now then,  every single bar you go into has live music.   Fab. They are all good but I remember vowing that if I ever heard this bloomin’ song again I would truly kill myself – Sweet Home Alabama……

I like it again now though (love it) seeing as I dont have to listen to it every 3 minutes. So the suicide watch is off.

New girl and I pop into a few likely bars, avoid the SHA (sweet home alabama) bars and then find one, a  random one – cant remember the name of it – sorry.

But there he was.  Big Al.  Think Barry White size  x 4.  Big Al was big, beautiful and with a voice, well, a voice to die for.  A sultry, sexy voice, again think Barry White but even better.

There he sat, in all his splendour, and well just singing.   I really dont know how they got this fella into the bar, perhaps he just lived there.  If he was under 45 stone, it could not be by much. But these awesome melodies that I for one would love to be able to sing, were for him, well just natural.  He was incredible.

Big Al was doing what he did and we came in and ordered a drink.  We are stood by the bar and Big Al starts singing and pointing in our general direction.  I am looking behind me, thinking he is singing to someone he knows, when a waitress comes up and says, ‘This is for you’ and presents me with a drink.  ‘Excuse me?’  I say.  ‘Big Al is singing to you darlin’ so this fella over there has bought you a drink’

Oh my.  You dont get that sort of thing in England :)  So on it went, all night.  Mr Big Al, dedicating all his songs, pointing as he sings and we, the pair of us get inundated with drinkies from people all over the place, all night long.  ‘I shall come out with you again!’ says my new New Zealand friend.

Ahh happy days, that is one of my very fond memories from New Orleans.  Now I want to go back again, hearing all this blues, I  hope Big Al is still there. He was the first person I thought of when I heard about the hurricaine.  Hope he’s still there.

I’ve not really been to New Orleans, only passed through the airport (Louis Armstrong New Orleans International no less) on my way to and from Biloxi. It’s a nice part of the world though, and as you say I’d like to go back someday.

  4. I was fairly sure I had the right guy. I could be cheeky and say it took me almost two months to find him, but actually it didn’t take that long. I was waiting for something to arrive from the States, a little something that will hopefully be in your post box by the time you get back from your spa break.
