Tate Britain is having an exhibition soon,  of saucy postcards, cartoons, British comic art and suchlike.  You know the naughty, highly suggestive postcards you used to get when you went on a seaside holiday? (do they still have them? and am I showing my age now?)

Anyway, Tate Britain is a mere hop and a skip from me, so we shall have to take a peak wont we?

Wine Buffs

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Just when you think you know a teeny little about wine (white) and champagne, you meet someone (or two) who knows infinitely more than you do.  That’s life though isnt it?  Reminds me of that brilliant, brilliant poster/sign which I have lovingly displayed for one and all here.

So, this gent of mine and someone else that I met the other day buys wine via auction. They know what they are doing too and have magnificent cellars.  Sigh.  I need to do this but I dont have the room to store all the lovely bounty I will surely get when I start bidding (and start to know what I am bidding for ).  I need to buy a house in London, central London with a wine cellar.  Impossible you say!  But Baldrick, I have a cunning plan hahaha  …. :) x

Glorious Days, Pink People & Jack

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Oh how fab is this weather?  I absolutely love it, it feels like I am on holiday, somewhere warm and balmy.  I have been buying lovely plants and herbs for the balconies – it is truly delightful out there.  You must come  visit.

Long may it continue!  Mind you, Ive seen a couple of lobsters around – and they werent intended for my lunches either.  Lots of folks walking around looking very pink or even bright red.  Not a great look, it looks so sore, ouchy ouch -  I so wish they would put some sunscreen on or better still not bake themselves in the full sun (I sound like my mother).

I would rather die than get sunburn (ok not exactly die :)  I remember having lunch with Miss Dollymopp last year and we went somewhere by the river;  al fresco.  It was a nice sunny day and we were both paranoid of the sun getting at us – we were inching our seats under the canopy at the same time, to be in the shade,  to save our skin :)

So whilst enjoying this wonderful weather, I did something I have had on my to-do list for ages.  I actually booked to do it last year but it was winter, and cold and wet and so I didnt go. I am a fair weather adventurer I am afraid.

I went on a Jack the Ripper tour last night.  I did mention it to the fellas who I used to see whilst on tour in London before I moved here and some back in the SW too.  So, guys I eventually got round to it.

What is it with people? People like me (and you, if you have been too :)  Why are we so morbid?  I guess its the same mentality of people watching a hanging, although I would like to think I would draw the line at that!  The tour had so many people on it, must have been 150; people just turn up and pay their money and away we go.  It was ok though, you got to hear everything that was said.  So a jaunt around the east end of London was the order of yesterday. I have always been fascinated by Jack the Ripper.  Actually, not just Jack but Victorian life in general, below stairs as it were.  I did mention to a couple of the fellas that me going on that tour felt a  little – well, wrong – on several levels – a tour about someone butchering prostitutes?  Hmm.  It wasnt the prostitute element that fascinated me, although that was very interesting, those poor ladies in the 19th century – a very tough life.  I have always been more intrigued with the other end of the industry though.  The not so blatant world in which ladies had so much more freedom and independence than other women of the age. Girl power if you like.   Oh and the glamour and mystery, of course, that has always piqued my interest too :)

I try and have a day off each week (usually a weekend)  to be a tourist here in London.  I didnt want to make the same mistakes I have made in the past when living somewhere but never actually getting to know the place.  So far I have seen the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, been to Tate Britain, Museum of London, Victoria & Albert Museum, a tour of Westminster, a visit to the Houses of Parliament, visits to Borough Market, Columbia Flower Market & Portobello Road, Westminster Abbey, oh and a tour around Covent Garden plus more; and then theres all the restaurants and other invites – I am getting around a fair bit -phew!  Lots more to see and do though and it only gets better in this weather.  I am available in London throughout Flaming June (crossed fingers) and can tell you all about my new adventures when we meet. x

Am I Still in Love?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Well, I moved here  to lovely London precisely 118 days ago and many of you fine fellas have enquired as to whether London is treating me well.

Well? She is treating me better than well.   She has laid out the red carpet, done a song and dance and thrown a massive house warming party as far as I am concerned.  ‘What about the people?  They are an unfriendly bunch in London, walk over you if you were dying in the street’  That’s what I used to hear.  Rubbish.  I have made so many good friends in a very short period of time.  I have got talking to more random people than I ever have any where else and believe me, I have travelled all over the world,  and then some.

London is my adoptive city now and like hundreds, millons of people before me, I love it. More than love it.  I feel as though I have lived here forever. It is so right that I am here.  I love the cosmopolitan air, I love the culture, I love the vast array of foodie heavens, I love the people, I love the acceptance, I love the diversity, I love the history, I love the innovation, I love the energy.  I have never been anywhere that helps business as much as London does. London is welcoming and wonderful and no, I am not vying for Boris’ job :)  I am not going to quote Samuel Johnson either, but for me right now, it rings true.

I am not going to leave London, ever.  That is coming from someone who usually says ‘Never say never, honey’.  I may spend 3 months every year in warmer climates but that is no reflection on London,  just on the northern (bloomin’) hemisphere in general.

I need to put something back, in the way of London charities et al , just have to find the right project.

By the way, check out the new Museum of London galleries – very, very fine. Yes I am still in love with London :)

Asparagus & Shiny Shoes

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

It is apparently asparagus fortnight. That means for the next two weeks, English asparagus is in season and that is really the only time you should have it, English asparagus being the best and all that.  I had some today and although, yes I do like it, I cant go into raptures unless someone incorporates into something quite magnificent – like a mousse on a lobster dish, that kind of thing.  Its alright though – am I spoilt?

Shiny shoes however, yes I can go into raptures about them.  I am not too comfortable paying £400 or £500 for a pair of shoes but I have recently bought two pairs that amounted to around £300.  LK Bennett.  My favourite shop in London.  It has everything I need (apart from knickers and stockings).  I love the clothes, shoes, bags and even the ladies who work there.  Bliss.  Its lovely, and totally my style.

I bought these last week.

They dont look like much here but very sexy on :)

and then there are my lovely new shiny ones which I bought yesterday and wore to lunch today.  So what, you say, big deal!  The thing is, I thought the more you paid for shoes, the more comfy they would be.  Not so, after a mere traipsy around Harrods my tootsies were begging to be relieved.  Honestly!  Do you think I should wear trainers when I go shopping?

Mrs Warren’s Profession

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

I went to the theatre the other day to see Mrs Warren’s Profession, a racy (at the time, but oh so tame now) play by Bernard Shaw about prostitution in the Victorian era.  Felicity Kendall played Mrs Warren, a high class madam and was excellent.  The play was actually banned for thirty years, so of course I had to go and see it :)

Shaw’s production was very clever in its portrayal of Victorian hypocrisy, no wonder it caused such an outcry and to some extent you may say that not much has changed.  There is a very sad ending which I wont spoil for you. I thoroughly recommend it, it’s at The Comedy Theatre in Piccadilly.

PS Do you like the picture?, it is called The Courtesan and is by Jan van Beers (1852-1927).  I would love the original but I think I may have to buy a print :)

Male Escorts

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

I had an email the other day from a boy in Devon asking,  no actually he demanded that I tell him how to become a male escort.  Instead of pressing the delete button as I should have done, I replied and said that unless he was gay, there would be no work for him.  He was outraged!  ‘Yes there will!’ he shouted, ‘you just dont want to tell me about it’. Hmm, sigh. I wish they wouldnt bother me, these people.

I remember a very comprehensive discussion about this very subject a few years ago and although it seems like the perfect life for some gents, in my humble opinion and that of others who have had vast experience in this industry, it is a myth.  It is usually a ploy from dubious agencies to get fellas to part with their cash to join, fill in an application and Bob’s your uncle – but a job never, ever materialises.  Just you try telling that to these fellas though.

Why this one would think that I would be the expert on male escorts, I am not quite sure.  Definitely there are gay male escorts and I can imagine there possibly being some work from a couple who want another male involved but dont give up the day job on the strength of the frequency of those bookings – one every couple of years may happen.  I think too many guys have been watching that fictional new tv series ‘Hung’.
