Sixteenth Century Courtesan

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

I am almost finished reading a great book – In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant.  It is initially set in sixteenth century Rome but quickly moves to Venice (where I hope to visit next year, and I am open to suggestions of fabulous places to stay!).  It is a truly gripping read seen through the eyes of the Courtesan  Fiammetta’s loyal dwarf servant, Bucino.  I urge you to read it if you can/want to but it is one of those books that you don’t want to put down and I do confess, I am rather hard to please in the literature department.

The other Courtesan medium that I want to get my sticky paws on is the film ‘Dangerous Beauty’ which is the tale of Veronica Franco, another Venetian Courtesan of the same period.  (have just ordered this!)

My first dip into this sort of literature was ’79 Park Avenue’ by Harold Robbins when I was a wee lass of 15.  I have never looked back hehehe. Miss Dollymopp has the definitive collection of harlot literature though and I am trying to work my way through them all :)

Here’s a little taster of the film Dangerous Beauty to whet your appetite!   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2Hrei0AtV8

The Worst Film Ever?

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Now maybe I have a shocking taste (but I think not), and true,  I haven’t seen this movie in its entirety, BUT  I really thought the  trailer was quite funny, in the style of Airplane! et al.   But ladies and gents, this was voted the worst movie EVER.  Honestly it was.  Do you think it was by the very same people who voted Four Weddings the best movie ever?? – ohhh I am naughty! , I know I am! hehehe  Now then, the  whole concept of this film  is fab, a big dollop of post modern irony – I desperately want to see it now!

- have a little look at the trailer :)

The Best British Film?

Monday, June 30th, 2008

What a travesty!  This must be wrong – very, very wrong!  I have just read that the silly film, ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ has just won an award for best British film EVER. (Puts film critic hat on) What about British realism? – fantastic films like ‘Kez’ and ‘Nil by Mouth’, ‘Kathy Come Home’ etc and also what about ’Withnail and I’ and ‘Trainspotting’?  Ok Trainspotting came in 2nd but you get my point don’t you?  I am sure you know lots more that would knock spots off that Hugh Grant tosh.  As you can see, I am very disappointed in this award.  As you can also probably gather, I am a great fan of British realism.  My favourite Director just has to be Ken Loach – I may have seen all of his films, never disappointed by any of them.  Four weddings? pah!
